Hooray for Summer Vacation!!!

Ahhh, just because school is out, doesn't mean you can be slackers! Keep up with your 20 minutes of daily reading! Remember you can read/listen to ebooks online at www.tumblebooks.com. The username is sallymauro and the password is books.

Suddenly 70's Progam!

Talk about a dy-no-mite time! Our class, along with Mrs. Shiner's and Mrs. Netz's class performed some of the greatest hits from the 70's such as Lean On Me, Kung Fu Fighting, and I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing. Each child was able to tie-dye their own shirt for the performance. I think they were all totally tubular!

Poetry Cafe

This year's poetry cafe was another success. The students had a fun time writing poetry about their friends, family and nature. I am so proud of them! They learned how to write a free form poem, acrostic, haiku, cinquain and clerihew. Each picked their favorite two poems to read aloud. After, they served fresh strawberries and chocolate eclairs to their parents. Thank you to all of the parents who came to support their child. It meant the world to them!

Upcoming Events

We made it through core testing, hooray! Everyone did their best and we are happy to have the testing over.

The following are activities scheduled for the last days of school:

Thursday (today, May 7) 1:00-2:00 Author's Open House. Come see what your child has been writing during this school year.

Tuesday, May 12 10:00-Poetry Cafe. We have been writing poems all during National Poetry Month-April and the students are anxious to share their poems with parents.

Friday, May 15, all day-Virtual Zoo Field Trip. Since we do not have the funds to leave the school for a field trip, we are having a 'virtual' field trip with Kindergarten and First Grades. We'll have a day of rotations learning about zoo animals. It will be a fun day!

Tuesday, May 19-Field Day. This is a fun day that the PTA has planned for our students. You may want to send sunscreen with your child that day.

Wednesday, May 20-Park Day. School lunches will be provided for your child. They can bring any outside equipment they want but they must be able to carry it themselves since we will be walking to the park. I would suggest giving them extra water and sunscreen.

Thursday, May 21-Last Day of School! Early Release at 11:15.

Review, Review, Review!

That's what we've been doing this week, getting ready for Core Testing. I'm so proud of our class! We have been hard at work, reviewing all that we've learned this year in 2nd grade and I expect everyone to do their best next week. I think we're all ready for school to be out!

We'll begin Testing next Tuesday the 5th, so make sure your child has a good night's rest starting Monday night and a good breakfast each morning. It's important to have good brain food to begin the day!

A Note About Core Testing

We have learned much to our relief, that 2nd grade will not have online end-of-year testing this year. This will allow the 2nd grade teachers more time to cover core concepts. We have set testing dates, May 4-8. I ask that your child not miss any school if possible since we will be heavily reviewing math and language art concepts during the month of April. Rocks Have Got to Wait!

We learned today that we will begin core testing April 27th. Our testing this year will be online and I expect things to go well. Since there are only 7 weeks until testing, we will be focusing on math and language arts instruction. This means that our rock projects will have to wait until after testing. This actually works out better since most of the rocks are still burried under inches of snow! I know the kids were excited, but like all good things, they'll just have to wait!

CALLING ALL ROCK HOUNDS!!!!

We are learning about rocks in science and your child needs to gather a collection of rocks...no more than 5. Put them in a clear Ziploc bag with your child's name on it and have them bring them to school by February 24th. Please, no store purchased rocks.

Welcome Miss Milano!

We are excited to have Miss Milano in our class for the next 5 weeks. She is a USU Elementary Ed student doing her Level II Practicum. She will be in our class on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and is looking forward to helping your child to succeed. She comes to us with classroom experience and has worked within the school district. All of the students have welcomed her and we are thrilled to have her with us!

Going Green!

The school District is going green next week (Jan 12-16) which means no copies of worksheets will be sent home. Students are encouraged to take practice tests on UTIPS for math homework and continue with the 20 minutes per day of reading.
